Over a century ago, my great-great-grandfather came to America from Alsace, France, with strong hands and an even stronger faith. He settled in a small town in Illinois and worked as a stonemason chiseling stone from Gerhardt Creek with care and reverence. That stone became the foundation of a little country church, a place that still stands today with its original bell rung by a rope and the echoes of generations of prayers.

That church became our family's anchor. I was confirmed and later married there. I baptized my children in its sanctuary, and now my great-great-nephews attend making us seven generations deep in our commitment to faith and community. Years later, I would go on to serve as a lay pastor there, stepping into the pulpit not just to preach, but to offer hope, healing, and a reminder that God is still nearby.
